Devi has 3 sisters and one brother. Devis’ father passed away when she was 3 years old, leaving her mother to be the sole incomer provider. Devis’ mother is a daily farmer, harvesting nuts. Earning just over $1 per day and working seven days a week and a minimum of 8 hours a day.

Devi has missed at least 5 months of continuous education from the age of 12, due to the location of the school being a 12 Km roundtrip (walk).

Devis mother was unable to feed her and is now very happy that she is at K.G.B.V school , as she is able to have three meals a day and also continue her education. Devi would like to become a doctor.

Name: P. Vengaleshwari (Gold) Age: 16 years Village: Mullikudi Favorite’s: Movie star is Vijay and subject is English Child labor: 1 year (13-14 years old) Joining age at KGBV : 14 years old

Gold has one brother and two sisters, sadly her father passed away when she was three years old, leaving her mother to be the sole income provider for the family. Golds’ mother works at the brick chamber 7 hours a day, 6 days per week, and earns $1 per day.  Gold, due to money problems also worked at the brick chamber for one year from 13-14 years old. Gold role was to load the trucks with bricks , carrying eight bricks on her head at any one time.

Gold stopped working due to ODAM arriving at her village and has been at the school ever since.  Golds mother is very happy as her daughter is able to continue with her education, and also receives three meals per day. Gold is the first person from her family to be able to read and write, she would like to become a lawyer.

 

Name: Murugavalli Age: 15 years old Village: Mullikudi Favorite’s: Movie star is Vijay and subject is Tamil and English Child labor: 2 year (12-14 years old) Joining age at KGBV : 14 years old

Murugavalli has 2 brothers and one sister, who is 18 years old and works in a cotton mill. Murugavalli parents both work at a brick chamber, and have worked there since they were 15 years old. Their job is to dig out the clay for the bricks. They work 6 days a week, 9 hours a day, earning $2 a day.

Murugavalli missed 2 years of school helping to support the family through cooking and cleaning. Murugavalli parents are now relieved that she as in school and continuing her education, and would like her to have a job that ODAM recommends.

Name: Ranjitha Age: 16 years old Village: Mullikudi Favorite’s: Movie star is Vijay and subject is English Child labor: 1 year (10-11 years old) Joining age at KGBV : 11 years old

Ranjithas’ mother is the sole income provider, her father does not contribute financially to the family. Ranjithas’ mother is a daily wage laborer, and Ranjithas 65 year old grandfather is a woodcutter, both earning sporadically less than $2 a day. They work on average 10 hours a day when the work is available. Ranjithas sister did work at a cotton mill but was unable to physically continue to work there.

Ranjitha to help support her family worked at the Brick Chamber , for one year from the age of 10 years old, working 10 hours a day, 6 days per week and earning $0.5 per day. Since the age of 11 Ranjitha has attended K.G.B.V school as a result of canvassing by ODAM in her village. Ranjithas mother and grandparents are very proud that she is in School and would like her to have a good government job. Ranjitha would like to be a Lawyer.

Sarasvathi has four brothers, her mother is a daily farmer working 10 hours a day, 6-7 days per week, and her father runs a small tea stall, working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sarasvathi parents earn collectively $2 per day.

Sarasvathi due to family money problems and no nearby local school missed 3 years of schooling from the age of 9.

Sarasvathi, along with her brothers is the first person in her family to receive an education. Sarasvathis’ parents are very happy that she is in KGBV School , and would like her to have any good job. Sarasvathi would like to become an English teacher.
